Fuel supply readiness vital for next generation of reactors, conference hears
Urenco spoke at the WNA Symposium 2026 in London, UK.
The importance of building fuel supply capacity to support the next wave of nuclear growth was a key theme for Urenco at the World Nuclear Symposium 2026. Urenco’s CEO, Boris Schucht noted that customer behaviour is already reflecting confidence in nuclear’s long-term prospects, with utilities increasingly securing fuel supplies through longer-term agreements. He was speaking at an Executive Plenary session on 10 September concerning how the sector can deliver existing reactor programmes – including largescale restarts and new builds - while preparing for the growth expected from further new nuclear projects, including SMRs. Boris said market signals continue to point towards future growth and stressed the importance of preparing the fuel cycle to meet demand as new projects come forward. Knowledge Zone Meanwhile, Advanced fuels were in the spotlight at the WNA’s new Knowledge Zone, a separate stage which provided an depth look at specific areas of nuclear. Urenco not only presented one of the sessions on advanced fuels, but also had it screened in head office and more widely via a livestream – the first time this has happened at Symposium. Urenco’s Head of Advanced Fuels, Commercial, Dr Magnus Mori, gave a presentation on our plans for advanced fuels before conducting a question and answer session with HALEU customer, Antares. The company was represented by its Head of Federal Strategy and Policy, Tom Mancinelli and was well attended. Magnus highlighted Urenco’s plans to deliver commercial-scale HALEU production from our new facility at Capenhurst by 2031 and discussed the importance of developing resilient fuel supply chains alongside reactor technologies. The Symposium took place in London from September 9 to 11 and we were a silver level sponsor.
