Wittenbach Panthers win Swiss Women’s Softball League
The Wittenbach Panthers swept the Zurich Barracudas in the best-of-three final series to win the top women’s softball league in Switzerland ( National Liga A ).
The Panthers won the first game at home in Wittenbach, in the Canton of St. Gallen, 11-3 in five innings. A six-run bottom of the first set the tone. Wittenbach lineup combined for 11 hits. First base player Maleah Milson went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs. Catcher Delaynee Lopez also had two doubles. The Panthers used four pitchers, with Michelle Zehnder going 1.2 innings for the win.
The second game proved a thriller. The Panthers scored four runs in the top of the first against starter Piper Reed, but the Barracudas, playing on home turf in Zurich, scored one run in the first two at bats and tied the game with a two-run bottom of the fourth.
The teams entered the extra innings tied at four and scored one run each in the eighth. Wittenbach won the game and the pennant when Michelle Zehnder hit a grand slam off Reed in the top of the ninth. Felicitas Schatton worked a scoreless bottom half of the frame. She earned the 9-5 win, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over three innings.
The Panthers won WBSC Europe’s Women’s Softball European Cup in August and will participate in the 2027 European Premier Cup.
The Swiss Baseball National League ( National Liga A ) is down to Game 5 of a thrilling best-of-five final series. The rubber match is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, at the Flyers’ home field, Ballpark Kaenelmatt in Therwil, near Basel.
Both expected starters have secured two wins for their teams. Mexican right-hander Ferlon Gijsbertha will start for Therwil, while the Barracudas will hand the ball to Aussie right-hander John Andrew Inglis. Zurich will count on 32-year-old right-hander Nick Miceli in the bullpen. He saved both wins for Inglis.
