USA outlast Canada in five-set final at Avenir Centre; NORCECA trio qualify for 2027 World Cup

USA outlast Canada in five-set thriller to defend NORCECA title – FIVB

USA defended their NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship title after outlasting Canada in a five-set final, completing a 3-2 (25-19, 26-24, 25-27, 17-25, 15-13) victory at the Avenir Centre on Wednesday.

The result saw USA finish the continental championship on top of the podium, with Canada taking silver and Cuba claiming bronze. All three teams also secured NORCECA’s available places at the 2027 World Cup in Poland.

USA established the early advantage, but Canada turned the final into a battle in a fiercely contested third set. The teams traded points deep into the closing stages, reaching 23-23 and then 25-25 before Canada finally broke through, with Xander Ketrzynski delivering on the final two rallies to take the set 27-25.

That momentum carried into the fourth, where Canada took command and opened a 22-12 lead before closing out the set 25-17 to send the championship match to a tie-break. Ketrzynski remained at the centre of Canada’s charge as the Americans were pushed to a fifth set after having stood one set away from the title.

The decider delivered another tight contest, with neither side able to create lasting separation. Canada drew level at 12-12 and the teams were still locked at 13-13 before a Canadian error handed USA championship point. Erik Shoji then kept the final rally alive with a dig before Kyle Dagostino Pasteur finished the match in attack for 15-13.

Ketrzynski finished as the match’s leading scorer with 26 points, while Matt Anderson and Jake Hanes led USA with 18 each. The contrast between the two sides was reflected in the numbers: USA held a 64-55 advantage in attack and 7-4 from the service line, while Canada dominated the blocking battle 12-5.

Earlier, Cuba secured the final place on the podium and their World Cup ticket with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 26-24) victory over the Dominican Republic. Robertlandy Simón, Miguel Lopez and Marlon Yant led a balanced Cuban offence with 11 points each as Cuba held the advantage in attack, blocking and serving.

With the continental title and NORCECA’s three World Cup places now decided, the competition continues with another major prize at stake – a quota place for the LA28 Olympic Games.
