USA power past China to secure place in WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Finals 2027

Hosts USA secured their place in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Finals 2027 with a 7-0, six-inning victory over China in the first Play-Off game at the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Group Oklahoma City at Devon Park on Wednesday.

Maya Brady powered the USA offence with three home runs and five RBIs, while Karlyn Pickens and Rachel Garcia combined to hold China hitless. USA join Japan, Puerto Rico, Canada and Chinese Taipei, along with hosts Australia, in the Finals field.

USA took control immediately of the game between the top two sides from the Opening Round, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of two-run home runs. Jayda Coleman led off with a double to left-centre field before Brady drove her in with a two-run homer to deep right field.

Alyssa Brito later drew a walk, advanced on Skylar Wallace’s sacrifice bunt and a groundout, before Tiare Jennings launched a two-run homer to centre field to double the lead.

Brady struck again in the second inning, hitting her second home run of the game and fourth of the tournament. The 258-foot shot to centre field left the bat at 80 mph and extended USA’s advantage to 5-0.

Pickens kept China hitless through the opening three innings, allowing two walks and striking out four. Garcia then took over in the circle and retired all nine batters she faced through the sixth, striking out six as the USA pitching staff carried a combined no-hitter into the bottom of the inning.

Brady then brought the game to an early finish with her third home run, a two-run, 276-foot shot to deep right-centre field that made it 7-0 and triggered the run-ahead rule.

Twenty-five-year-old Brady, who plays her club softball in Oklahoma, finished with five of USA’s seven RBIs and increased her tournament total to five home runs. Pickens earned the win after three hitless innings, while Garcia added three perfect innings in relief.

Garcia said USA’s dominant run through the tournament was the product of the work done away from competition.

“This is not easy, but I think it's the hard work that you're putting in before all this and when nobody is looking, and just being able to prove why you deserve to be on this stage,” she said.

With qualification for the Finals secured, Garcia said the focus now turns to continuing the work over the next year.

“The goal is to just keep training and still trying to represent my country and just stay on top and do everything that I can,” she said.

USA advance directly to the Finals 2027, which will be played in Redcliffe, Australia, from 5 to 11 April.
