Malaysia denied the hosts, who had won the men’s team and women’s team table tennis titles earlier, a clean sweep by winning the men’s doubles crown. Ankur Bhattacharjee emerged as the men’s singles champion after edging compatriot Payas Jain 4-3 (11-8, 9-11, 7-11, 11-8, 4-11, 11-4, 11-9) in a thrilling final. The 19-year-old Indian table tennis player had beaten his experienced compatriot Manav Thakkar 4-1 in the semi-finals. Payas Jain reached the final after defeating India’s Manush Shah in the semis. In the women’s singles final, Yashaswini Ghorpade defeated Paris 2024 Olympian Sreeja Akula 4-1 (11-6, 11-1, 8-11, 11-7, 13-11) to claim the title. Ghorpade had earlier accounted for India’s Sutirtha Mukherjee in the semi-finals. Sreeja Akula, meanwhile, booked her place in the final after beating Syndrela Das in the last four. India also struck gold in women’s and mixed doubles events. Sreeja Akula and Syndrela Das secured the women’s doubles crown with a 4-0 (11-8, 11-13, 11-8, 11-6) victory over compatriots Yashaswini Ghorpade and Divyanshi Bhowmick in the final. Manav Thakkar and Taneesha Kotecha beat Malaysia’s Ai Xin Tee and Richard Rui Zhe Yap 3-2 (11-8, 10-12, 10-12, 11-9, 11-5) in the mixed doubles final. Malaysia’s Shen Qi Wong and Javen Choong then denied India a clean sweep with a 3-0 (11-9, 12-10, 11-7) win over Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah. The Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships returned for the first time since the 2019 edition, which was also hosted by India in Cuttack. India had become only the third nation to complete a clean sweep of all seven gold medals that year. This time, the hosts finished with six titles despite the absence of Olympian and India’s top-ranked women’s player Manika Batra.
