Hockey will have added significance in Aichi-Nagoya, with the men’s and women’s tournaments serving as continental qualification events for the LA 2028 Olympics. The winners of the Asian Games hockey competitions will earn direct qualification for LA28. Squash star Anahat Singh will also return to the Asian Games after helping India win a women’s team bronze at Hangzhou 2023. She also won a mixed doubles bronze at the Games alongside Abhay Singh. Deepanshu was to wrestle in the Greco-Roman 130kg event but was suspended for a doping violation. Ronak Dahiya was named as replacement. Shooter Gaurav Kumar Masoori (10m air pistol) was also dropped for a doping offence and was replaced by Akash Bharadwaj. In equestrian, the show jumping squad – comprising Abhishek Chopra, Yashaan Zubin Khambatta, Niharika Singhania and Maryk Sahney – was axed after failing to meet the sports ministry’s selection criteria.
