For å kunne tilby eple som kan konkurrera med importerte eple i kvalitet både - i perioden med tollvern fram til 1.12, i desember og etter nyttår, vil norske fruktlager fortsetja kunnskapsbygginga og forbetringsarbeidet med mål om å tilby attraktive norskproduserte eple. Kva faktorar som er avgjerande for at eit eple kan lagrast til mars og eit anna må seljast i september skal undersøkjast for eksisterande sortar både med og utan bruk av etylen-hemmaren 1-MCP (SmartFresh), og ved ulike nyare lagringsteknikkar. Det vil gje ny inngåande kunnskap om modningshormonet etylen og korleis etylen påverkar modningsutvikling, stressresponsar, fysiologiske skadar og ròte i noverande og utvida salsperiode. Ved å undersøkja eple i realistiske tilhøve på fruktlagera, og gjera forsøk med nye teknologiar som til dømes SmartFresh (1-MCP) skal eksisterande sortar sin kvalitet forbetrast slik at risikoen for fruktkvalitetstap og skadeutvikling vert minimert. Potensialet for utvida salsperiode for kvar av sortane skal bestemmast og sjåast i saman med kva tiltak som då må setjast inn for å unngå spesielt ròteutvikling under lagring. Den gule sorten Asfari er allereie planta i relativt stor skala, men det er ikkje gjort testing av potensiell lagring- og omsetjingstid. I Eple-X skal Asfari vera modellsort for utvikling av eit testregime for sortar i større skala testing. Samla vil arbeidet gje grunnlag for ein protokoll med eit nødvendig testregime for sortar som vert tilrådd prøvt i stor skala der målet er å vita nok om potensiell lagring og omsetjingstid før planting i kommersiell skala eventuelt vert tilrådd.
